DAY: And they had everything open, and like they was giving away water. You could go get, uh, cases of water. Uh, you could get- you could go get socks. You know, just, big buckets of cleaning supplies and stuff. All this was going on, you know. They said they had some money they was giving away, that the Red Cross had, but we never did- we never did see that. And their like “get back to McGruder”. Somebody told me about them, and I went up there. I called, when I went up there, and I talked to Wil, the one that called yall and told me about this. And, he told me, he said “do you need some help? Somebody comin’ by cleaning up, we got volunteers that’ll come by and help, you know, clean your house out and help take the stuff out.”
I said “no, my brother did that.”
And he was like, “well we want to help.” He said “give me your address, and, give me your number, and I’m gonna call.”
And I got a letter in the mail, and I was like “what is this?” And I looked at it and it said ‘were givin’ away gift cards for Christmas. Five hundred dollars.’ And I said “oh man. It’s a blessing”. And I said “OK”, and it was telling me the date on the letter, to come by to get it.
So Wil wanted to make sure that I got it, so he called me on the phone, he said “Miss Day did you receive your letter?”
I said “I did”.
He said “well I just wanted to make sure. Because I want to make sure you got your letter.”
He’s a real sweet person. Wil was a great help, he really was. ‘Yall can put him in there, because, I mean- he called me, he, you know, he was just on the job. You know, he said “people are devastated. My house wasn’t affected, but people’s around me were. And I just, I feel for them. We can’t help everybody, but people that lost everything, that’s who we want to help.”
And they did.
