Description
A
photograph
of the
Rutledge-Baxter
House
,
located
at
101
Lea
Avenue
in
Nashville
,
Tennessee
. This
historic
building
rests
on the
site
of "
Rose
Hill
" the
grand
antebellum
home
of
Henry
and
Septima
Sexta
Rutledge
, a
young
couple
who
were
members
of the
distinguished
Rutledge-Middleton
families
of
South
Carolina
.
It
was at
Rose
Hill
that the
couple
frequently
entertained
such
notable
friends
as
Rachel
and
Andrew
Jackson
,
Sarah
and
James
K
.
Polk
,
Sam
Houston
, and
others
.
Historians
believe
the
Marquis
de
Lafayette
stayed
at
Rose
Hill
during
his
1825
Tennessee
tour
. The
residence
was
perched
on a
knoll
overlooking
the
Cumberland
River
and
featured
acres
of
terraced
rose
gardens
.
Circa
the
1880's
,
it
was the
home
of
Edmund
Baxter
, a
lawyer
and
brother
of
railroad
magnate
Jere
Baxter
.
Some
historians
have
suggested
that
Baxter
altered
the
formal
,
federal
style
of the
home
with the
addition
of an
elaborate
front
porch
and a
central
dome
;
others
credit
the
addition
of the
porch
to
Septima
Rutledge
. Also, a
large
portion
of the
Rose
Hill
residence
was
destroyed
by
fire
circa
the
Civil
War
. In the
20th
century
, there were
various
owners
of the
property
and the
building
became
dilapidated
and
needed
architectural
renovation
. In
2006
,
Blackburn
&
McCune
moved
their
law
firm
into the
Rutledge-Baxter
House
. The
structure
is
part
of
Metropolitan
Nashville's
Rutledge
Hill
Redevelopment
District
.
